Atlanta registered and licensed dietitian nutritionist, Lesley Baradel, began her professional life in the world of business, offering a unique advantage when working with nutrition clients. After majoring in Economics at Vanderbilt University, she went on to work with Capital One Financial in Richmond, VA. A few years later, she moved to Sydney, Australia to open the Australian office of a Florida-based swimming pool and spa manufacturer selling swimming pool heating pumps. During her two years there, she saw firsthand the difference between the large, oftentimes processed American diet, and the fresh, moderately sized portions of Aussie cuisine. It was upon learning of the culture and new approach to eating that her interest in wellness began to take form. When Lesley returned to the United States, she attended Emory University’s Goizueta Business School in Atlanta where she received her MBA in marketing strategy. Upon graduating, Lesley began working at GMAC Insurance and, while she had been competing in sprint and Olympic distance triathlons for 5 years, she began focusing on Half-Ironman and Ironman distance triathlons and the importance of sports nutrition in these events. It was then that she began to dream about being a dietitian and of following her life-long interest of helping others pursue healthier lives through exercise and nutrition.
So, at the age of 35, and with the encouragement of her husband, Lesley went back to school to receive her masters in health sciences with a focus on dietetics. While earning her degree, Lesley
was awarded the Outstanding Dietetics Student of the Year award from the Georgia Association of Nutrition and Dietetics. In 2009, her master’s thesis titled “Temporal changes in trying to lose weight and recommended weight-loss strategies among overweight and obese Americans”, 1996-2003 was published in Preventive Medicine (written with the CDC, Aug/Sept 2009).
Lesley is President of the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has also held many key positions including Chair of Professional Issues and Treasurer. Lesley is a member of several dietetic practice groups including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND); the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; the Sports Cardiovascular, and Wellness dietetics practice group; the Nutrition Entrepreneurs dietetics practice group; and the Dietetics in Integrative and Functional Medicine dietetics practice group. She was an elected member of the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics from 2006 – 2012.
Lesley has competed in all distances of triathlons, including the Ironman, and was named a 2013 All American athlete by USA Triathlon and is currently ranked 3rd in the nation in her age group for Aquabike racing.
In her free time, Lesley loves to spend time with her husband, Chris, and their three children Ava, Tyler, and Lindsey. Lesley is also a certified cycling instructor at LifeTime Fitness and loves to remain youthful by knowing all the “latest and greatest” music trends.
